So you want to buy a cheap used car? There are many ways to make your purchase; internet, newspaper, auction or direct from a dealer. Skokie's used car expert, Al Sigler warns buyers of scams to avoid and where to go for the best price. Having bought and sold cars for over 20 years, Al Sigler of Sigler's Auto Center in Skokie has seen it all. "The best prices are online. Usually dealers offer a special internet price that is lower than their offerings anywhere else. The newspaper is okay but the listings are likely old by the time you read them. Forget about auctions. I've been going to them for years and there are things that an inexperienced buyer just won't know. Some sellers I won't buy from even if the car is priced right and looks great because I know from past experience that the guy's a cheat and his cars are garbage. You can find great deals out there but I suggest you start online."

Personal Auto Shopper

Name Your Price! How to Get the Car or Truck You Want at the Price You Want, No Hassels!

Today, the best way to buy a car or truck is to forgo the dealership and head straight for the internet! Better yet is to have a Personal Auto Shopper do the work for you!

Leah Atkin can attest to that. When the 26 yr. old savvy shopper moved from the Chicago to the suburbs and found that she needed a car, Leah went from dealership to dealership but could not find the Honda Accord she wanted. “I wasn’t asking for something unreasonable. I wanted a Honda Accord 2004 or newer with power windows and doors, less than 50k miles and the price had to be under $15,000. This was a big purchase for me and it just wasn’t happening at the dealerships!

None of the dealerships I went to had my car and when they did, they weren’t willing to work with me on the price. My sister suggested that I look online. I buy shoes and airline tickets online but a car? Sure enough, I found that I could get everything I wanted at a very competitive price with no bargaining. While searching cars.com, craigslist.org and ebay.com, I came across an offer from Sigler’s Auto Center that I couldn’t refuse! Sigler’s is an independently owned used car dealer in Skokie, IL. I registered for their free Personal Auto Shopper program. I spoke to their very knowledgeable sales manager who took down all of my requirements including the price I was willing to pay. A week or so later I received a call from the sales manager letting me know that he found my car! Sigler’s even put the car on hold for a few days while I was on vacation. The 2005 Honda Accord was exactly as they described and the price was right! It was so easy and I was completely in control! I will never go back to the old way of buying cars!"

How to Deal with Stingy Car Insurers
Tips from veteran auto body shop owner, Al Sigler www.siglersautocenter.com
Al Says…First I’d like to apologize for having to start off with bad news, the little fender bender you just caused is going to cost you money even though you’re insured. If you have a $500 deductible and you have to replace a fender which cost a minimum of $800 and could be as much as $3000+, you can say good bye to your money. Your insurer will now suggest a collision repair shop.

Shops that are in the network of approved service providers work for the insurance company and not you . Most auto shops will do what they are told by the insurance companies because to stand up for the customer would threaten an important stream of business. Your car may suffer because they are forced to cut costs. Insurance companies request so many discounts and have rules that result in the repair shop doing the bare minimum just to stay in business. Independent shops like Sigler’s Auto Center in Skokie, IL. accept insurance but they aren’t afraid to advocate on behalf of their customers and are proud to be independently owned and operated for nearly 30 years.

For a list of independent shops that meet certain quality criteria, e-mail Al Sigler of Sigler’s Auto Center and he will provide you with the names of recommended independent auto repair shops in your area.

Here are some tips that help our customers save money…Don’t get taken for a ride by your repair shop! One of the most important things you can do to avoid costly auto repairs is preventive maintenance. Regularly scheduled trips to the Auto Center can save you money in the end. Ask us for a customized repair/maintenance schedule based on the needs of your specific vehicle. When bringing your car in for repairs, be sure to ask for a written estimate ahead of time if one is not provided. You'll also want to make sure that the repair shop will get your approval to perform work that exceeds the initial estimated amount. Car pooling isn’t just for kids anymoreParents long ago recognized the value of getting together to share the burden of schlepping the kiddies around. Working folk need to get onboard. Don’t overlook the cost of commuting when determining your monthly car expenses. Along with gas and tolls, you may have fees to park your car. Let us not get started on the expense associated with the future environmental impact of all of these single drivers. Car pooling, either with coworkers or through a car pooling service, and taking advantage of public transportation (e.g. train, bus) in your area can greatly reduce your commuting expenses and you may even get to read a good book. Tired of being over insured? Shed that extra coverage today! After your car payment, your monthly insurance premium may be your second-largest car-related expense. Follow these simple steps to save money on your insurance:

  • Shop around--in most states, premiums vary widely from company to company, so it often pays to compare policies
  • Increase your deductible--typically, increasing your deductible will result in a lower premium
  • If you drive an older car, consider dropping collision and/or other-than-collision (also known as comprehensive) coverage
  • Take advantage of discounts--ask your insurer what types of discounts they offer (e.g. low mileage, antitheft devices, air bags, antilock brakes, safe driver)
